Getting Political on this Song of the Week

Yep. It's been a crazy week.  Let's just say it: protesting is as American as it comes. Don't forget: this country was rooted in drunken men throwing rocks and ice at British soldiers.  And taking a knee at a football game is not disrespectful--it is a fulfillment of the American ideal of protest. If you are more concerned about the flag than you are about injustice, especially in communities of color, than this song is not for you. But it is. It is for all of us. "Fight the Power" by the Isley Brothers is this week's Song of the Week. The Song of the Week can be heard on Vinyl Voyage Radio at 10 am and 10 pm Central on Wednesday, and throughout the week. Watch (and listen) to this song spinning on the platter below:

This song forms the basis for one of my oldest musical memories. Yes, John Denver was a staple in my house. And this song was one of my favorites.   Taken from J ohn Denver's Greatest Hits from 1973, this song, like the majority of songs on the album, were rerecorded versions of the songs. However, this version was the only one I knew growing up. Listen to the "Song of the Week" at 10 am and 10 pm, Wednesday and throughout the week on Vinyl Voyage Radio. Take a listen to the song played on original vinyl below.

Nights in White Satin -- Song of the Week

The Vinyl Voyage Song of the week is the quintessential unrequited love song. And it was written by a 19 year old. From their 1967 release, Nights in White Satin was written by Justin Hayward. The song was inspired by his girlfriend giving him some satin bedsheets. The Song of the Week premieres every Wednesday on the 10s, am and pm, Central time. It then repeats throughout the week. Here it is spinning on original vinyl below.

Rainy Days and Mondays--The Song of the Week

I'm not ashamed to admit that I am a fan of the Carpenters. And Karen Carpenter had one of the most majestic voices in pop music. On the Vinyl Voyage Song of the Week, we are spinning "Rainy Days and Mondays." This song is a sublime reflection of that melancholy state we have all experienced at one time or another. Hear this song on Wednesday, September 6 at 10 am and 10 pm (Central). You'll even hear a clip of Karen singing the song without the music track.

AiV 50th Episode: Time Machine!

Back in 2010, I opened up the boxes of records I had in storage in my basement and was taken back to my childhood and to simpler days. Among the albums, of course, were countless K-tel compilations. I wanted to share this with the world and in 2011, Vinyl Voyage Radio was born. In January of that year, the very first episode of Adventures in Vinyl was released. It featured the first K-Tel album that I purchased: Music Power from 1974. And now, we are at our 50th episode! In honor of our 50th episode, I decided to revisit an idea I had a few years ago. What if we created our own K-Tel compilation? There are songs that have punctuated the K-Tel catalog throughout the 70s. These songs were a big part of my childhood.  Last year I posted an idea: If K-tel would release a new album featuring iconic songs from their catalog, what would go on that album? My response was Time Machine . Originally, my version had just 14 songs. For the 50th episode of Adventures in Vinyl, I deci...
