Halloween on Vinyl Voyage Radio - 2025

Halloween is our favorite time of the year here on Vinyl Voyage Radio. The fun starts at 1pm with hand-selected tunes perfect for Halloween. Then, we have some treats!

The Haunted Mansion in Story and Song

2pm - This is a tradition here on VVR. This album I bought as a kid in the early 70s in Disney World. Featuring Ron Howard, this is the original Haunted Mansion story.

Pumpkin Party of Death

3pm - This is the very first mix made by our friend J-Bones. He is a master when it comes to making Halloween mixes.
Take it Outside, Mr. Pumpkin

4:30 pm  This is the second ever mix by J-Bones (and one of my favorites).

The Weird Show

6:30 pm - This is the latest JB mix. And it's a good one.

And then, a surpise JB mix later at 10pm. Which one will it be?

Happy Halloween!

Episode 5 of Songs in the Key of Dave is Available!

Tomorrow at 2pm, Eastern, we have a new episode of Songs in the Key of Dave - E05 - "Wrecks, Waves and Corvettes." From MG antics at St. Michael’s to cruising Lake Shore Drive, this episode dives into my dad’s lifelong love affair with cars, boats, and even a few motorcycles.

Hear stories of the Corvette he gave up for love, the sailboat adventures on Lake Michigan, Uncle Louie’s motorcycle racing, and yes—the infamous Pinto. Featuring music from Chuck Berry, The Beach Boys, Chicago, Christopher Cross, Arlo Guthrie, and more—including songs celebrating the mighty GTO and, of course, Corvettes. Because no matter where life took him, it always came back to Corvettes.

Episode 04 - Songs in the Key of Dave - "We Did Something Right"

Songs in the Key of Dave – Ep 4: We Did Something Right

This special episode was recorded around the kitchen table in Florida, as my sister Lori and I visited our parents, Lynn and Dave, for Mom’s birthday. It’s the first time the four of us have been together in nearly a decade. Over gin and tonics, we laughed, swapped stories, and revisited the soundtrack of our family life—Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, the Oak Ridge Boys, Vikki Carr, and more. Along the way we talked about concerts, campers, curfews, and even tornadoes on the plains.

The episode closes with Mom’s simple but powerful reflection: “Dave, we did something right.”

Join us for an hour of music, memories, and family.

Listen Sunday at 2pm, Eastern -- or, right now on Mixcloud.

New show on Vinyl Voyage Radio: Songs in the Key of Dave

This week, we are premiering a new show on Vinyl Voyage Radio -- a show that blends memories and music. My dad, Dave, lives in Florida, so we meet now once a week virtually and share a glass of wine. I thought it would be fun to record our conversations and make shows based on our talks.

This week, we discussed the types of music that he listened to growing up. Hanging out in coffee shops in the mid-to-late 50s, my Dad had fully embraced the folk revival scene that exploded at that time.

The first episode is called  "First it was FOLK." On this episode we talk about growing up in Old Town and listen to some Burl Ives, the Kingston Trio, Peter, Paul and Mary, Johnny Cash and many more.

This show will premiere at 2pm Sunday, August 31, 2025. New episodes will drop at that time every week. Want to hear it early -- here you go:  It is now available for streaming on Mixcloud!

Songs in the Key of Dave can be heard at the following times, Eastern:

Sundays, 2pm
Wednesdays, 8pm
Saturdays, 3am

Vinyl Voyage Radio - Studio is Down

 Hi Voyagers!

If you haven't noticed, our stream may be sounding a bit different. Our power is out in our main studio, so Vinyl Voyage Radio is not streaming live. Our back-up server is now activated, playing an eclectic mix of music. Regular programming will begin once power is restored, but that may not be until Monday night or Tuesday.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

The Moody Blues and Warren

How many 20-year-olds know about the Moody Blues? Warren does.  This episode is dedicated to a fascinating young man who is a walking encyclopedia of 20th century music and pop culture. Warren knows it all and is more comfortable in an analog world.

Warren loves music, especially music from the 80s. He also loves old tv shows, cartoons and movies. Plus, he loves puppets.

A couple of years ago, I hosted Warren on a video podcast from the school where I am the librarian. He talked then about his life and his puppets. Check it out below.

Warren has been making puppet episodes for years. Check out his channel on Youtube.

This episode of The Song of the Week was inspired by Warren, who brought up the Moody Blues the other day. Listen at 11am/11pm, Eastern on Wednesday June 4 and throughout the week.

8 Years Down!

Your fire burns me like a favorite song
A song I should have known all along

We have been spinning a different song every week on the Song of the Week since May 2017. This episode starts the beginning of our 9th year. And we begin this year, like we always do, with a song from my favorite band, Over the Rhine.

Ohio is one of the greatest albums. Period. And we began this journey with "Nobody Number One" on May 17, 2017. This week, we revisit this album for the fifth time. I just can't get enough.

Join us at 11am and 11pm on Wednesday May 28 for "Bothered," by Over the Rhine...on our 417th episode of Song of the Week.

Played on original vinyl.

Of course.

Song of the Week - Wednesday, March 19

I grew up on Simon and Garfunkel. My parents had the greatest hits album on 8-Track and, as an adult, I collected all of the duo's albums. Except this one.

I just picked it up at a resale shop for $4.

This is their first album, released in 1964. Although it was a flop, it contained one of the greatest songs ever written. Listen this week on Vinyl Voyage Radio

What happened to the Vinyl Voyage App?

Vinyl Voyage Radio used to have dedicated apps (and if you downloaded it from the Google Play store, it should still be available on your Android phone) but these apps are no longer available in the either app store.

Why?

Well, it's a matter of cost. For Apple, in particular, it gets expensive to keep an app in the store and constantly meet the demands for updates. It's just extremely cost prohibitive to do so.

My solution: use a third party app dedicated to internet radio.

I use My Tuner Radio on my phone. It integrates extremely well with Android Auto in my car. And, I can place other channels in my favorites and scroll through them. This app is available for both Android and Apple.

The thing that works for me is that I can listen to terrestrial radio as well (if they have an internet feed) as my car radio is not very good. It is also available on Roku, Apple Tv and many other services.

Perhaps in the future, I may make an app again for Vinyl Voyage Radio, and learn how to update and code for both operating systems. But for now, this is working really well for me. And I hope it will for you, too.

Vinyl Voyage Radio now on BlueSky

It seems appropriate that today we are moving from Twitter (yeah, I know it's no longer called that) to BlueSky. You can follow us there. https://bsky.app/profile/vinylvoyage.bsky.social

We will also be doing some updating to the station. We are constantly adding more music, but our app is out-of-date and can no longer be found in the app store. We are looking for alternatives. 2025 will be a year of change for us.

But, don't worry, the vinyl music still plays 24/7. More eclectic than ever.

Thank you for listening.
