Terry grew up outside of Toronto, with K-Tel and CHUM 1050 AM influencing his musical tastes. On this special episode of Adventures in Vinyl , Terry discusses his memories of K-Tel, specifically focusing on the Canadian artists that often appeared on K-Tel releases. This episode features some great Canadian staples: The Poppy Family, James Leroy and Denim, Lighthouse, the Stampeders, Chilliwack, and many, many more. This month on Adventures inVinyl , we are going back to 1979 for "Circuit Breaker" - a great K-Tel compilation featuring hits from Foreigner, Leif Garrett, the Babys, Anne Murray and many, many more! I love finding albums that were at one time owned by others who wrote their names on the cover or the label. I recently purchased a K-Tel album and discovered that it was owned by Anthony Frizzell. His neat signature appears across the label of side 2 of Today's Super Greats, Part-2 . This is a great album, with 14 hit songs that span 1970-73.  The artists include Rod Stewart, Dawn, Shocking Blue, Joe Simon, Chairmen of the Board and many more. This is the pinnacle of K-Tel greatness. Released in 1980, this album introduced me to Pat Benatar, Blondie, the Ramones, Cheap Trick and Joe Jackson. This album features hit songs from 1982 and 1983, including Haircut One Hundred, Toni Basil, Pat Benatar, Santana, Rush and many, many more. This album was released in 1983 simultaneously with another K-Tel compilation, "Get Dancin'." You can hear "Hit Explosion" on weekends throughout the month of July. This month, we are taking a time trip back to 1975 for Souled Out, a K-Tel compilation of Funk and Soul classics from 1975. The album features Bill Withers, Kool & the Gang, Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Hues Corporation and many more. Like its counterparts, Super Bad and Super Bad is Back , this album is more of a concept album capitalizing on the early 70s trend in blaxploitation films. Although, by the time of its release, blaxploitation was losing favor in 1975. Here is the television commercial for Souled Out : This album was new when I purchased it on Ebay. On the last episode of Adventures in Vinyl , we went back to 1975 for the K-Tel classic, Out of Sight . As usual, we listened to the American release. However, being a global corporation with many subsidiaries, K-Tel International often released different versions of the same album simultaneously in different territories. Out of Sight is no different. This month, we will be featuring the Canadian version of Out of Sight . Although they look very similar, these two albums are very different. In fact, only 5 of the 20 songs on the Canadian version can be found on the U.S. release. In some cases, the artists are the same, but the song selection is different. Overall, another solid release.  This album is heavy on some Canadian bands that don't often appear on U.S. releases. Such as the Stampeders : and Tinker's Moon . There's no pictures of this band. K-Tel was famous in the 70s and 80s for producing compilation albums with such memorable titles as Super Bad ,  Right On and Music Machine .  However, K-Tel was not the first to do this.  Before K-Tel, there was Master Seal. Master Seal was one of several companies in the 1950s to produce budget compilation albums, sold mostly through dime stores, such as Woolworths.  8 Top Hits was the title often sold by Master Seal and often featured young people either dancing or singing on the album cover.  Unlike K-Tel, however, Master Seal did not sell compilation albums with original artists.  They re-recorded the music with a sound-alike band.  Although there was an effort to make the tracks sound like the originals, often the results were laughable.
