Getting Political on this Song of the Week

Image
Yep. It's been a crazy week.  Let's just say it: protesting is as American as it comes. Don't forget: this country was rooted in drunken men throwing rocks and ice at British soldiers.  And taking a knee at a football game is not disrespectful--it is a fulfillment of the American ideal of protest. If you are more concerned about the flag than you are about injustice, especially in communities of color, than this song is not for you. But it is. It is for all of us. "Fight the Power" by the Isley Brothers is this week's Song of the Week. The Song of the Week can be heard on Vinyl Voyage Radio at 10 am and 10 pm Central on Wednesday, and throughout the week. Watch (and listen) to this song spinning on the platter below:

Frank Sinatra and the "Afternoon Croon"

Image
It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Frank Sinatra. As a teacher, I put Frank Sinatra extra credit questions on every test, reward kids with Frank Sinatra extra credit tokens and often play Sinatra for the kids as they work in class. When I first started teaching, I gained a little notoriety when I created the Frank Sinatra Detention Club . When kids got a detention, they came in after school and I played 30 minutes of Frank Sinatra music for them. And, I sometimes sang as well. It was a slow newsday back in September, 1992. For a few days, the story was all over; first on the front page of the Chicago Sun-Times and then on the front page of USA Today . Then came the calls and the shows: local radio, Good Morning America and even a joke by Jay Leno on the Tonight Show .  It was crazy. People thought my "punishment" was funny. I, however, never saw it as a punishment. I saw it as a means of introducing students to the great Frank Sinatra. Here we...

Christmas Music That Doesn't Suck

Image
About two weeks ago, the local radio station here in Chicago flipped to all Christmas music all the time.  Now, for me, that is way too early. I don't necessarily like Christmas music before Thanksgiving.  I happen to really like Thanksgiving and don't like the fact that Christmas is overshadowing this equally important holiday.  Plus, my wife's birthday falls around this time, so the Christmas encroachment is pretty nefarious. I do like Christmas music, however.  But good Christmas music, not the kind played on the radio-station-that-shall-not-be named (For those of you who live in the Chicago area, you know what I am talking about.  This station literally sucks the life out of Christmas.)  How many times a day can a person hear Wham's " Last Christmas " before wanting to harm himself or others? Some of my best memories of Christmas as a kid involves music.  Good music. My parents had a rather large collection of Christmas albums.  They too...
