"Country Road," This Month on AiV

As Donny and Marie sang, "I'm a little bit country...."

On this episode of Adventures in Vinyl, we are going back to 1975 for the K-Tel compilation, Country Road. We don't play much country here on Vinyl Voyage Radio, but when I found a great. clean copy of this album at Goodwill, I needed to have it. Honestly, I don't know to much about country music but here it is, a country album now on Adventures in Vinyl.

This album features all sorts of country music from a wide range of country artists--from classic Honky-Tonk to crossover hits. Some of these you'll probably know. Others, not so much.

If country music is not your thing, give this album a try. You might be pleasantly surprised.

I sure was.

This new episode of Adventures in Vinyl can be heard throughout the month of April

Episode 42 Adventures in Vinyl: Souled Out (UK version)

Happy New Year!  We begin the 2017 season of Adventures in Vinyl with a great treat. On the last episode, we spun K-Tel's 1975 release, Souled Out.  This month, we will listen to the UK version of the album.

K-Tel released multiple versions of many of their albums in different regions. The UK version of Souled Out has a different track list than the US version. And, in my opinion, a better track list, too.

This episode comes to us courtesy of a listener who goes by the name Johnny Gators. He sent me a vinyl rip of this album. He also has a show on the No Hold Barred Radio Network, a channel specializing in adult comedy and talk.

Listen to Adventures in Vinyl, Souled Out (UK) at the following days and times.  Or, stream on demand via Mixcloud

Saturday 12:30 pm (Central)
Sunday 4 pm (Central)
Wednesday 2 am (Central)

This Month on AiV: "Souled Out" (1975)

This month, we are taking a time trip back to 1975 for Souled Out, a K-Tel compilation of Funk and Soul classics from 1975.

The album features Bill Withers, Kool & the Gang, Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Hues Corporation and many more. Like its counterparts, Super Bad and Super Bad is Back, this album is more of a concept album capitalizing on the early 70s trend in blaxploitation films. Although, by the time of its release, blaxploitation was losing favor in 1975.

Here is the television commercial for Souled Out:

This album was new when I purchased it on Ebay. On this episode, we will play it for the first time.

Included with the album was a bonus: a K-Tel catalog from 1975. This is a treasure from the glory days of K-tel. Here is a .pdf version. Read it. Download if if you like. Enjoy.

Adventures in Vinyl can be heard at the following times (Central):

Saturday, 12:30 pm
Sunday, 4:00 pm
Wednesday 2:30 am

Or listen to it at any time at Mixcloud.

Out of Sight--The Canadian Version on AiV!

On the last episode of Adventures in Vinyl, we went back to 1975 for the K-Tel classic, Out of Sight. As usual, we listened to the American release. However, being a global corporation with many subsidiaries, K-Tel International often released different versions of the same album simultaneously in different territories. Out of Sight is no different. This month, we will be featuring the Canadian version of Out of Sight.

Although they look very similar, these two albums are very different. In fact, only 5 of the 20 songs on the Canadian version can be found on the U.S. release. In some cases, the artists are the same, but the song selection is different.

Overall, another solid release.  This album is heavy on some Canadian bands that don't often appear on U.S. releases. Such as the Stampeders:

and Tinker's Moon. There's no pictures of this band. They were session musicians and only released two singles.  On this album is also a Canadian band named Chilliwack:

In addition to the Canadian bands on this release, there's also an obscure British pop band called The Rubettes. Here's what these guys looked like:

If that picture doesn't make you want to listen to this album, then there's something wrong with you.

In addition to those obscure artists, there's also Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, the Hollies and Elton John as well.

Adventures in Vinyl can be heard on Vinyl Voyage Radio at 12:30 pm central Saturday, 4:30 pm central on Sunday and 2:00 am on Wednesdays. Older episodes can be heard at 1 pm Tuesdays and 10:30 am Thursdays.

All episodes can be heard on Mixcloud as well.

New Episode of Adventures in Vinyl--Out of Sight, 1975

This has been a long time coming. So much for my New Year's resolution to get a new episode of AiV up every month. But this is a special treat: back to back episodes featuring the same album. Well, not exactly the same.

K-Tel often released different versions of the same titled album in different territories. The album may have looked the same, but the contents were often very different. Case in Point: Out of Sight from 1975.

On this episode of Adventures in Vinyl, we will are spinning the American version of the album. Next month, we'll listen to the Canadian version. Back to back K-tel.
As usual, this episode features news, music and movies from 1975.

New episodes of Adventures in Vinyl stream at 12:30 pm, Saturday and 4:30 pm on Sunday and 2:00 am on Wednesday. Also, past episodes are heard on Vinyl Voyage on Tuesday at 1:00 pm, and Thursday at 10:00am.
You can also listen to these episodes anytime you want. All 33 episodes are archived at Mixcloud. The new episode is embedded below.

K-Tel's Music Express, this month on AiV

Going back to 1975 for this one.  K-Tel's Music Express was one of the first albums that I ever got. It features Captain and Tennille, Elton John, 10cc, Jigsaw and Barry Manilow.  Plus many, many more.

Here is a detailed look at K-Tel's Music Express, including chart data for all of the songs.  This album features 20 songs....most of which were heavily edited. For example, Phoebe Snow's "Poetry man" is a mere 1 minute, 58 seconds.

But that's K-Tel for you.

Music Express will be streamed in its entirety on Adventures in Vinyl this month.  Only on Vinyl Voyage Radio.

Adventures in Vinyl can be heard

Saturday 12:30 pm
Sunday 4:00 pm
Tuesday 1:00 pm
Wednesday 2:00 am
Thursday 10:00 am

All times Central.
